Bonded kittens Mike and Ike have a heartwarming tale of recovery and companionship. Rescued from a box outside when they were just a few weeks old, these adorable siblings have found solace in every available lap since their rescue. Their story highlights the resilience and affectionate nature of these young cats as they navigate their new life.

From Rescue Cat to Recovery: A New Beginning

Two gray kittens, barely a few weeks old, were discovered abandoned in a box outside. With their mother nowhere in sight, the tiny kittens were in urgent need of care and intervention. Tails High, an all-volunteer rescue organization, stepped in to provide them with the nurturing environment they desperately needed.

After spending 2-3 weeks in their care, the kittens’ bellies filled out, and their energy levels soared. Upon arriving at their new foster home, Mike and Ike (initially believed to be boys) quickly made themselves at home. They wasted no time in seeking out any available lap, demonstrating their friendly and fearless nature.

A Lap Full of Love

Asa, their dedicated foster mom, shared with Love Meow, “A lap never stays empty for long when Mike and Ike are around. They’ve been incredibly friendly from day one and are absolutely fearless.” The resident dogs, always eager to meet newcomers, wagged their tails in excitement upon hearing the kittens.

Typically, new kittens might be hesitant or aloof around dogs, but Mike and Ike were the exception. “These two ran straight up to my four fur kids, including both cats and dogs. They even approached the vacuum cleaner, which was amusing to see,” Asa recalled.

A Journey of Healing and Growth

During a routine vet visit, Asa discovered that Mike and Ike were actually girls, but the names stuck. The kittens had a favorite blanket and loved snuggling with each other or their foster dog, Kona. Ike, in particular, enjoyed making biscuits on Mike before they curled up together for a nap.

Mike faced a challenging period, struggling to gain weight and keeping food down. Asa experienced several worrying moments and feared for Mike’s survival. “I thought we might lose her, and it was heartbreaking to think about,” Asa admitted.

Observing that Mike had difficulty breathing and swallowing while eating, Asa found a solution by holding her upright. “This technique worked wonders. Now, I ‘purrito’ her upright every mealtime to ensure she digests properly.”

During Mike’s recovery, Kona offered comforting presence, and the kittens often snuggled with her for warmth and security. Gradually, Mike started eating well and gaining weight, catching up with Ike.

Life with Mike and Ike: A Daily Delight

As Mike and Ike continued to grow, their days were filled with play and affection. They often clambered over Asa or napped on her lap as she worked. The kittens’ playful antics and constant need for cuddles made working from home a joyful challenge.

“How do I get anything done?” Asa humorously questions. “It’s a daily struggle with these two demanding to be held side by side.”

Though the kittens were once identical, their appearances are becoming more distinct as they grow. Asa finds the process bittersweet, knowing that each milestone brings them closer to adoption. “Watching them grow up is both rewarding and emotional,” she reflects.

Today, Ike has proudly joined the 3-pound club, and Mike is catching up. Both kittens are thriving, finding comfort in their foster mom’s lap day and night, and are well on their way to finding their forever homes.
